Aurora Monkeys — northern lights hunting and aurora borealis chasing tours in Rovaniemi, Finland

We don’t come from six-seven generations of aurora hunters. We’re monkeys — we’ve been here much longer.

About us

The story is short: we grew up in the very North in the 90s. We know the roads, we watch the forecasts, we look at the sky, and we live by one important rule: if it’s meant to be then it will be.

Aurora Monkeys is a small local company creating experiences in groups of up to 8–16 guests. No giant buses, just comfortable Japanese vans. We don’t talk too much either. We’d rather listen to Sade while driving, enjoy the views and let the North do the talking.

Reviews

The aurora tour is very great. The guide drove us to Sweden and we managed to find to clear sky to see the amazing dancing aurora. The guide is professional and knows how to find the spot and the lights. Thank you so much!

The trip was amazing! The tour started on time and Nikita, our tour guide, already knows where to go looking for the aurora. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about aurora and we did not wait for long until we get to see aurora! He helped taking our picture too whenever we requested. It was truly great experience as the view of aurora was magnificent! Really recommended this tour!!

This was our first trip, planned to see the Northern Lights, and choosing this tour was the best decision. We even went all the way to Sweden—it was completely worth it. Our guides, Nikita and Alisa, were knowledgeable and passionate, making the experience even more special. Thank you for an unforgettable trip!

It is really an incredible experience! Everything was perfectly organised by Alisa and team. They were very attentive, friendly and polite and did everything to make us feel comfortable during the entire experience. Alisa knows very well on how to navigate through weather, solar flares and aurora activity. We even crossed the border to get the best viewing opportunity and then we waited and waited and then finally we had the magical moment when we saw the aurora dancing. It is really an unforgettable night. I would recommend this tour to anyone without any hesitation.

Nikita is a real professional. The tour was well organised, the vehicle was warm. We patiently waited as he was tracking the northern light activity on his phone. Not long after we could see the lights as their intensity was slowly increasing. He took beautiful photos of us. Very happy with the tour!

We look for the best realistic conditions, take you somewhere beautiful, show you the aurora if nature allows us, take some nice photos and bring everyone home safely. If there’s no Aurora, tour price refunded. We drive when there is a reason to drive: it’s smarter and a little kinder to the planet too.

Terms & Conditions for Tours and Experiences

Last updated: 22 September 2026

These Terms & Conditions apply to tours, activities and experiences organized and provided by:

Wherever Hostel
Business ID: 2861657-9
Rovaniemi, Finland
Email: whereverhostel@gmail.com
Phone / WhatsApp: +358-40-725-05-51

Certain experiences may be marketed under the name Aurora Monkeys. Aurora Monkeys is a marketing name used for selected experiences organized by Wherever Hostel. All bookings, payments, contracts and legal responsibilities remain with Wherever Hostel unless expressly stated otherwise.

By making a booking, the customer confirms that they have read, understood and accepted these Terms & Conditions together with the description and conditions of the selected experience.

1Definitions

Customer / Guest / Participant means a person who makes a booking and/or participates in an experience organized by Wherever Hostel.

Booking means a reservation made through our website, booking system, email, telephone, WhatsApp, social media, a third-party booking platform or another accepted booking channel.

Booking Confirmation means written confirmation of the selected service, date, price and other relevant booking information.

Experience / Tour means any tour, activity or experience organized by Wherever Hostel.

2Services and prices

The description, approximate duration, inclusions, participation requirements and price of each experience are stated on the relevant booking page, sales channel, offer or Booking Confirmation.

Prices include applicable VAT where required under Finnish tax legislation.

Only services specifically stated as included in the experience description or Booking Confirmation form part of the booking.

Additional stops, private transportation, meals, drinks, additional pickup locations, extended driving, private photography or other additional services are not included unless expressly confirmed by Wherever Hostel.

Wherever Hostel may change prices before a booking has been confirmed.

Once a booking has been confirmed at an agreed price, the confirmed price will not normally be changed unless the customer requests an additional service or a change to the booking.

3Booking and payment

A booking becomes confirmed once the customer receives a Booking Confirmation and any required payment has been completed according to the booking instructions.

Available payment methods are displayed during the booking process or agreed separately for direct bookings.

Bookings made through email, telephone, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook or other direct communication channels are also subject to these Terms & Conditions unless different conditions have been expressly agreed in writing.

The person making the booking is responsible for:

  • providing correct booking and contact information;
  • making the required payment;

informing Wherever Hostel of relevant participation information;

ensuring that all other participants included in the booking receive the relevant booking information and conditions.

4Right of withdrawal for online bookings

Tours and experiences are generally leisure services provided on a specific date or during a specific period.

Accordingly, where the exception provided by applicable consumer legislation applies, these services do not have the standard 14-day right of withdrawal normally associated with distance or online purchases.

The cancellation policy applicable to the booking is instead determined by these Terms & Conditions and any specific cancellation terms displayed before purchase.

Nothing in this section limits any mandatory rights available under Finnish consumer law.

5Cancellation policy

Unless a different cancellation policy is clearly stated for a particular experience before booking, the following conditions apply.

Regular bookings

24 hours or more before the scheduled start of the tour: Free cancellation.

Less than 24 hours before the scheduled start of the tour: 100% cancellation fee.

No-show: 100% cancellation fee.

Group bookings

A booking for 6 or more participants is considered a group booking.

11 days or more before the tour: Free cancellation.

7–10 days before the tour: 50% cancellation fee.

Less than 7 days before the tour: 100% cancellation fee.

No-show: 100% cancellation fee.

Cancellation deadlines are calculated according to Finnish local time.

A booking is considered cancelled when the customer clearly communicates to Wherever Hostel that they will not participate.

Once a cancellation has been received, Wherever Hostel may immediately make the cancelled places available to other customers.

Where a third-party booking platform has its own cancellation procedure, the cancellation may need to be submitted through that platform.

These cancellation conditions do not limit mandatory rights available under applicable Finnish consumer law.

6Changes requested by the customer

Requests to change the date, number of participants, selected product or other booking details are subject to availability.

Wherever Hostel is not required to approve a requested change after the applicable free cancellation period has expired.

Any difference in price resulting from a customer-requested change may be charged separately.

7The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon.

Their occurrence and appearance cannot be controlled or guaranteed in terms of:

  • brightness;
  • colour;
  • intensity;
  • duration;
  • movement;
  • position in the sky;
  • visibility to the naked eye;
  • photographic appearance.

Wherever Hostel uses available weather forecasts, cloud maps, aurora and solar activity information, live observations, road conditions, local knowledge and experience when planning Northern Lights experiences.

Conditions can change very quickly.

For this reason, departure time, route, destination, viewing location and tour duration may change according to the conditions of that particular night.

A faint, pale, weak, brief or partially visible aurora is still considered an aurora sighting.

The Northern Lights may appear considerably brighter and more colourful in photographs than they appear to the human eye because of camera settings, exposure times and image processing.

Photographs, edited images, videos, social media content, promotional materials or AI-generated imagery do not constitute a guarantee of what the Northern Lights will look like during a particular experience.

8Weather and forecast information

Weather forecasts, cloud forecasts, aurora forecasts, solar activity information and similar data are predictive tools only.

They may change at any time and cannot guarantee a particular outcome.

Any information provided by Wherever Hostel before or during an experience represents a reasonable assessment based on the information available at that time.

It is not a guarantee of future cloud cover, weather or aurora activity.

9Aurora refund guarantee

Where an experience is specifically advertised with an Aurora Refund Guarantee, the guarantee and its conditions will be stated in the relevant experience description before booking.

If no Northern Lights are observed during an eligible tour, Wherever Hostel will provide the refund described in the applicable experience description.

Where a transportation or fuel contribution is retained following an otherwise refundable Aurora Refund Guarantee tour, the amount or method of calculation will be clearly disclosed before purchase.

No additional undisclosed deduction will be made from the refund.

A faint, pale, weak, brief, partially visible or photographically more visible aurora counts as an aurora sighting and does not qualify as “no aurora”.

The Aurora Refund Guarantee concerns whether an aurora was observed during the experience.

It does not guarantee the aurora’s brightness, colour, intensity, duration, movement or photographic appearance.

10Refund amounts

Any refund is calculated based on the amount actually paid by the customer for the affected service.

Discount codes, promotional discounts, gift cards or a higher public retail price do not increase the refundable amount.

Where a booking was made through a third-party booking platform, the refund may need to be processed through that platform according to its payment procedures.

Refund arrival times may depend on the payment provider, booking platform and customer’s bank.

11Driving distance and “Unlimited mileage”

Unless explicitly stated otherwise in the specific product description, Wherever Hostel does not guarantee a particular minimum or unlimited driving distance.

Routes are selected according to actual conditions and what reasonably makes sense on the night of the experience.

Driving a longer distance does not automatically increase the likelihood or strength of the Northern Lights.

Weather, cloud cover, aurora conditions, road safety, driving times, wildlife, customer wellbeing and staff wellbeing are considered before deciding whether to travel further.

Where appropriate and permitted by the booked experience, the tour may travel towards or into Sweden.

Safety always takes priority over distance.

12Location and route decisions

Viewing locations and routes are selected using the information reasonably available at the time.

Clouds, weather and aurora activity may change after a route decision has been made.

The fact that another group, guide or location later experienced stronger or more visible Northern Lights does not by itself mean that the route selected by Wherever Hostel was incorrect or that the booked service was defective.

13Cancellation by Wherever Hostel

Wherever Hostel may cancel, postpone or materially modify an experience where circumstances make the experience unsafe, impractical or impossible to operate as reasonably intended.

Such circumstances may include:

  • dangerous weather;
  • unsafe road conditions;
  • serious vehicle problems;
  • guide or driver illness;
  • official restrictions;
  • border restrictions;
  • major technical problems;
  • force majeure;
  • other circumstances outside reasonable control.

If Wherever Hostel cancels an experience before departure, the customer will be offered:

  • rescheduling to another available date, where the customer agrees to the change; or
  • a refund of the amount paid for the cancelled experience.

Nothing in this section limits mandatory consumer rights under Finnish law.

Refund processing times after the refund has been issued may depend on the payment provider, booking platform and customer’s bank.

14Tour times and duration

Departure times for Northern Lights experiences may change depending on weather, cloud movement, darkness, aurora activity and road conditions.

Customers must check messages from Wherever Hostel on the day of the experience.

The final meeting or pickup time may be communicated later in the day once current conditions can be assessed more accurately.

Tour durations shown online are estimates unless specifically stated otherwise.

An experience may finish earlier or later depending on the conditions of that night.

15Meeting point and contactability

Customers must remain reachable using the telephone number, email address or messaging service provided during booking.

Wherever Hostel may reasonably update the meeting or pickup time or location because of weather, traffic, road conditions or operational circumstances.

Customers are responsible for checking messages received on the day of the experience.

Wherever Hostel is not responsible for problems resulting from incorrect or inaccessible contact information supplied by the customer.

16Late arrival and no-show

Customers are responsible for arriving at the confirmed meeting point at the confirmed time.

Northern Lights, road and weather conditions can change quickly and the group may need to depart without delay.

Wherever Hostel is not required to delay departure for late participants.

A customer who fails to arrive by the confirmed departure time may be treated as a no-show.

No-show bookings are subject to a 100% cancellation fee unless mandatory law requires otherwise.

17Pickup and drop-off

Transportation from the designated meeting point is included where stated in the experience description.

Pickup or drop-off from other addresses may be available on request but is not guaranteed unless specifically confirmed by Wherever Hostel.

Additional pickups depend on route, timing, availability and group logistics.

Wherever Hostel generally uses centralized meeting points because collecting guests from multiple addresses can significantly delay departure.

Reducing unnecessary city driving also allows the group to react more quickly to changing weather and cloud conditions and helps reduce unnecessary fuel consumption.

18Return time and onward travel

Return times are estimates only.

Customers are strongly advised not to arrange flights, trains, buses or other time-sensitive onward transportation immediately after the estimated end of a Northern Lights experience.

The experience may finish later than expected due to weather, road conditions, traffic, changing aurora conditions, route adjustments or other circumstances.

Wherever Hostel is not responsible for missed onward transportation resulting from circumstances outside its reasonable control, except where liability cannot legally be excluded or limited.

19Route and itinerary changes

Outdoor experiences in Lapland depend heavily on natural and operational conditions.

Wherever Hostel may reasonably change the:

  • route;
  • destination;
  • viewing location;
  • departure time;
  • meeting point;
  • order of activities;
  • duration;

where necessary due to weather, road conditions, safety, environmental conditions or other reasonable operational circumstances.

Reasonable changes that do not materially reduce the agreed service do not automatically entitle the customer to a refund.

Mandatory rights under Finnish consumer law remain unaffected.

20Border crossings

Some Northern Lights experiences may travel towards or into Sweden where conditions justify doing so and where the booked product allows it.

Customers are responsible for carrying all documents legally required for international travel, including where applicable:

  • passport;
  • national identity card;
  • visa;
  • residence permit;
  • other required travel documentation.

Wherever Hostel is not responsible where a participant cannot cross an international border because they do not possess the required documents.

21Small-group experiences

Wherever Hostel primarily operates small-group experiences.

Group size depends on the specific product.

Where a maximum group size is expressly guaranteed in the experience description, Wherever Hostel will follow the stated maximum.

Where no specific maximum is guaranteed, group size may vary according to bookings, vehicles and operational arrangements.

22Photography

Where photography is included in an experience, Wherever Hostel will make reasonable efforts to take photographs when conditions allow.

Photography opportunities may depend on:

  • weather;
  • aurora activity;
  • lighting;
  • group size;
  • available time;
  • safety;
  • technical conditions.

Photography included as part of a standard group tour is not a private professional photoshoot unless specifically booked as such.

23Photo delivery

Where photographs are included, they will normally be delivered electronically after the experience.

Delivery may take several days and may take longer during periods of high demand.

Wherever Hostel does not guarantee a specific number of photographs unless a specific quantity is expressly stated in the experience description.

Technically unsuccessful, duplicated, blurred or otherwise unsuitable photographs may be excluded from delivery.

24Personal cameras and phones

Customers are welcome to bring their own cameras and phones.

Where possible and where time allows, a guide may assist with basic camera settings.

This assistance is complimentary and does not constitute professional technical support.

Wherever Hostel cannot guarantee compatibility with every camera, phone or photography system and is not responsible for unsuccessful photographs taken using a customer’s own equipment.

25Winter overalls and equipment

Winter overalls or other equipment may be available where stated in the specific experience description.

Availability of particular sizes cannot always be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance.

Even where winter clothing is provided, customers remain responsible for wearing appropriate:

  • base layers;
  • footwear;
  • socks;
  • gloves;
  • hats;
  • other suitable winter clothing.

26Clothing and winter conditions

Northern Finland may involve:

  • extremely low temperatures;
  • snow;
  • ice;
  • strong wind;
  • darkness;
  • rapidly changing weather.

Northern Lights tours may involve standing outdoors for extended periods.

Customers are responsible for dressing appropriately for the conditions.

Wherever Hostel is not responsible for ordinary discomfort resulting from inadequate personal clothing or equipment supplied by the participant.

27Health and safety

Customers are responsible for considering whether the selected experience is appropriate for their physical condition and individual circumstances.

Any relevant information that may materially affect safe participation should be communicated to Wherever Hostel before the experience.

Some experiences may involve:

  • long-distance driving;
  • remote locations;
  • very cold temperatures;
  • darkness;
  • uneven terrain;
  • snow and ice;
  • limited access to immediate medical assistance.

Wherever Hostel may refuse, restrict or discontinue participation where there is a genuine and reasonable safety concern.

Wherever Hostel does not provide medical advice.

28Pregnancy

Some experiences may involve long drives, remote locations, low temperatures, uneven ground and icy terrain.

Pregnant customers should consider whether the selected experience is appropriate for their circumstances and seek professional medical advice where appropriate.

Relevant information should be communicated before participation where it may materially affect safe participation.

Wherever Hostel does not provide medical advice.

29Child policy

Unless a different age limit is clearly stated in the specific experience description, participants in Northern Lights experiences involving remote locations or potentially long driving distances must be at least 14 years old.

Wherever Hostel does not make exceptions to a stated minimum age where the restriction exists for safety or operational reasons.

A parent or legal guardian is responsible for participating minors.

Different age limits may apply to other tours and experiences and will be stated in the relevant product description.

30Conduct and behaviour

Participants must behave respectfully towards:

  • other customers;
  • guides and drivers;
  • local residents;
  • wildlife;
  • nature and the environment.

Participants must follow reasonable safety instructions provided by the guide or driver.

Harassment, threatening behaviour, violence, serious intoxication, deliberately disturbing wildlife, repeated refusal to follow safety instructions or behaviour that creates a genuine safety risk may result in refusal or termination of participation.

A participant removed from an experience because of serious misconduct or safety-related behaviour will not normally be entitled to a refund, except where applicable law requires otherwise.

31Alcohol and intoxication

A customer who arrives significantly intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other substances in a manner that may compromise safety may be refused participation.

Alcohol consumption inside tour vehicles may be prohibited.

Refusal of participation because of serious intoxication or unsafe behaviour does not normally entitle the customer to a refund.

32Personal belongings

Customers are responsible for taking reasonable care of their personal belongings.

Customers should check the vehicle and other locations used during the experience before leaving.

Wherever Hostel is not responsible for belongings that are lost, forgotten, stolen or damaged unless the loss or damage results from circumstances for which Wherever Hostel is legally responsible under applicable law.

33Vehicle safety

Passengers must use seat belts where required and remain properly seated while the vehicle is moving.

Participants must follow reasonable safety instructions provided by the driver.

The guide or driver may:

  • reduce speed;
  • change route;
  • stop;
  • wait;
  • turn around;
  • discontinue part of a route;

where weather, road conditions, wildlife, technical issues or other circumstances create a safety concern.

The possibility of seeing stronger Northern Lights never overrides road safety.

34Motor liability insurance

Vehicles operated by Wherever Hostel are insured as required by Finnish law.

Liability and compensation following a road traffic accident are determined according to applicable Finnish legislation and the terms of the relevant insurance.

Nothing in these Terms limits rights that cannot legally be limited under Finnish law.

35Personal travel insurance

Customers are strongly advised to obtain appropriate personal travel insurance.

Depending on the traveller’s circumstances, insurance may be useful for:

  • medical expenses;
  • accidents;
  • trip cancellation;
  • trip interruption;
  • personal belongings;
  • unexpected travel expenses.

Personal travel insurance remains the responsibility of the customer.

36Photographs, video and promotional use

Photographs and videos may be taken during an experience.

Where photography forms part of the booked service, photographs may be delivered to participants for their personal use.

Wherever Hostel may separately ask participants for permission to use selected photographs or videos for marketing purposes, including:

  • websites;
  • social media;
  • GetYourGuide;
  • other booking platforms;
  • advertising and promotional materials.

Clearly identifiable photographs or videos of participants will not be used for promotional purposes without appropriate permission.

Participation in promotional photography is voluntary.

Refusing promotional use does not affect participation in the booked experience.

Consent for future promotional use may be withdrawn by contacting:

whereverhostel@gmail.com

Withdrawal does not affect use or processing that was lawful before consent was withdrawn.

Customers may take their own photographs and videos during an experience but must respect the privacy and personal rights of other participants.

37Intellectual property

The Wherever Hostel name, Aurora Monkeys branding, logos, illustrations, original graphics, website content, photographs, videos and other original materials are protected by applicable intellectual property laws.

Commercial reproduction, redistribution, modification or commercial use of these materials without permission is prohibited.

Customers may use photographs delivered to them for ordinary personal purposes and personal social media unless otherwise stated.

38Complaints

If a customer believes that an agreed part of the experience is not being provided correctly, they should inform the guide or Wherever Hostel as soon as reasonably possible.

Where possible, Wherever Hostel should be given a reasonable opportunity to investigate and address the issue during the experience.

Complaints submitted after the experience should be made in writing without unnecessary delay and should include:

  • booking name;
  • booking reference where available;
  • date of the experience;
  • description of the issue;
  • relevant supporting information.

Complaints may be sent to:

whereverhostel@gmail.com

Nothing in this section limits any mandatory rights available under Finnish consumer law.

39Force majeure and exceptional circumstances

Wherever Hostel is not liable for failure or delay caused by circumstances outside its reasonable control to the extent permitted by applicable law.

Such circumstances may include:

  • extreme or dangerous weather;
  • dangerous road conditions;
  • natural events;
  • serious transportation disruption;
  • strikes;
  • border restrictions;
  • decisions or restrictions imposed by authorities;
  • major accidents;
  • major technical failures;
  • other comparable extraordinary circumstances.

Where reasonably possible, Wherever Hostel will take appropriate steps to reduce the effect of such circumstances on customers.

Nothing in this section limits any mandatory right to a refund, price reduction, compensation or other remedy under applicable law.

40Liability

Wherever Hostel will provide its services with reasonable care and in accordance with applicable Finnish legislation and relevant safety requirements.

Because the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, Wherever Hostel is not responsible for disappointment arising solely from their natural:

  • brightness;
  • colour;
  • intensity;
  • duration;
  • movement;
  • visibility;
  • photographic appearance;

provided that the agreed service has otherwise been properly performed.

Wherever Hostel is not liable for delays, reasonable route changes or interruptions caused by circumstances outside its reasonable control, including changing weather, road conditions, traffic, wildlife, authority instructions or natural phenomena, except where liability arises under mandatory applicable law.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where such liability cannot legally be excluded or limited.

Nothing in these Terms restricts mandatory consumer rights under Finnish law.

41Third-party booking platforms

Where a booking is made through GetYourGuide or another third-party marketplace, travel agency or booking platform, additional booking, payment and cancellation procedures of that provider may apply.

Refunds, amendments or cancellations may need to be processed through the original platform.

The experience itself remains provided by Wherever Hostel unless expressly stated otherwise.

Where mandatory consumer rights or applicable legislation conflict with a contractual condition, the mandatory legal requirement prevails.

42Online and direct bookings

By completing a booking, the customer confirms that they have had an opportunity to review:

  • the selected experience;
  • the price;
  • the main inclusions;
  • relevant participation requirements;
  • the cancellation conditions;
  • these Terms & Conditions.

Where a booking is made directly through email, telephone, WhatsApp or another agreed communication method, the agreement becomes binding once the booking has been accepted and confirmed according to the agreed payment conditions.

43Changes to these terms

Wherever Hostel may update these Terms & Conditions from time to time.

The version normally applicable to a booking is the version in effect when the booking was made.

A later change to these Terms will not normally alter an already confirmed booking unless:

  • required by mandatory law; or
  • specifically agreed between the customer and Wherever Hostel.

44Service language

The primary language used during tours and experiences is English, unless another language has been specifically agreed in advance.

The availability of another language is not guaranteed unless expressly confirmed.

45Applicable law and dispute resolution

These Terms & Conditions are governed by Finnish law.

If a customer is dissatisfied with a service, the customer should first contact Wherever Hostel so that the matter can be investigated and the parties can attempt to resolve it directly.

Written complaints may be sent to:

whereverhostel@gmail.com

A consumer may also contact the Consumer Advisory Services of the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority (KKV) for advice.

If a consumer dispute cannot be resolved between the parties, the consumer may, where applicable, refer the matter to the Finnish Consumer Disputes Board (Kuluttajariitalautakunta).

Nothing in these Terms prevents a consumer from exercising dispute-resolution or court rights available under mandatory Finnish or European Union law.

46Severability

If any individual provision of these Terms & Conditions is found to be invalid, unlawful or unenforceable, this does not automatically invalidate the remaining provisions.

The remaining Terms will continue to apply to the extent permitted by law.
